What's the Secret to Walking with God?

It's one thing to take a walk on a beach at sunrise alone and quite another to share that experience with someone. It's one thing to walk through heart-wrenching tragedy alone and quite another to share the experience with someone.

To share the beauty. To share the pain. To share the joys. To share the trials.

The Bible mentions several people who walked with God. One man was Enoch. Merely a few verses tell his story:

Enoch lived 365 years, walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day, he disappeared, because God took him (Genesis 5:23-24).

It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying - 'he disappeared because God took him.' For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God. And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him (Hebrews 11:5-6).

A man lived, walked with God closely, and went to heaven without dying.

Enoch's great-grandson is also credited with walking with God, though we know more of his story - Noah.

Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God (Genesis 6:9).

What a legacy to leave! That others would remembered you by your proximity to God - how you faithfully walked with Him.

But what does walking with God look like? How does it work?

When we walk along a beautiful beach with someone else, we can discuss and dream and question and ponder. We share decisions on next steps to take, how far to go, when to turn around.

When we walk through tragic times full of pain alongside someone else, we can sit in silence when words fail, we can cry together, we can laugh together over memories of loved ones now gone. We can connect in tragedy and pain faced together that others cannot fully understand because we've experienced it together and not with the world at large.

So what's the secret of walking with God? Of doing life with Him in this practical, real, rich, and experiential way?

The secret to walking with God is to let Him lead.

A couple on a ballroom dance floor is made of two individuals with two unique roles: one leads and one follows. When they work in tandem, each fulfilling their intended role, they appear as one entity flowing effortlessly and intentionally through their steps. They create beauty.

However, when both try to lead, missteps take place. What could have been beautiful is now chaotic and stunted.

God will not force you to follow. His invitation to follow Him, to walk with Him, stands today. But that invitation will not last forever. The music of Time will come to an end. But until that point, there is still an opportunity for each of us to take up His invitation for a long walk through life, to witness and marvel at its beauties and even through its pain.

Will you let Him lead? Will you begin your walk with God today?
